How Oregon Got to be a State?

Picture
On February 14, 1859, Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state. The arrival of the railroads to the Oregon territory in the 1800's brought about a lumbering boom and by 1859 Oregon was admitted as a state. Although conservative politically, Oregon was the first state to have initiative referendum and recall. Also as the explorers came (Spanish,  Europeans and others) when they discovered the fur and fur trade more people started coming in making it a state. Pioneers from the East Coast border states and merchants traveling by ship from New England increased the Oregon population, leading to the creation of the Oregon Territory in 1848 and statehood in 1859. Disputes for control of Oregon between American settlers and the Hudson Bay Company were finally resolved in the 1846 Oregon Treaty in which Great Britain gave up claims to the region.
